E-Soccer has been a part of my life since I was very young. I have been a volunteer almost every Saturday morning for close to 10 years. Growing up, I saw participating in E-Soccer as an opportunity for me to play soccer and hang out with friends. It was not until I entered high school that I understood the real reason our family all piled into our van early every weekend to head to the E-Soccer field. E-Soccer is not just about playing a sport. It’s all about providing opportunities and experiences for children and families who can have challenging or overwhelming circumstances in their lives.

During my freshman year, my mom was diagnosed with lymphoma. It tore me apart, seeing my mother go through so much pain, and there was absolutely nothing I could do to change that. I felt completely powerless and overwhelmed. While this experience was extremely difficult, it inspired me to help others who have to endure that feeling of powerlessness every day. E-Soccer became so much more for me at that point. It was no longer just soccer on the weekend.

E-Soccer allows parents to bring their children with special needs to a safe environment where they can relax, knowing that their kids are developing their social and motor skills and making friendships with typical kids their age. I have learned to cherish this ability to help relieve the families of that feeling of powerlessness that I know is such a heavy burden.

E-Soccer is something I look forward to at the end of every week. Getting up early on Saturday mornings never seems as much of a chore when I know that I am going to a place where I can make friends and help others. E-Soccer has become an integral part of my life, and I am sure it will continue to be for the rest of my life.
